While teachers can give lots of encouragement and tips for improvement in lessons, the biggest improvements will come from effective music practise at home. But sometimes it can be tricky to know how to practise and what works best. Here are 3 top tips to make practise effective.
- Start a routine. Often students at the beginning either love music and will practise all the time, or be new to practise and not sure when to set aside time. If you can get yourself or child into a routine where particular times of the day are focussed on music practise it will make it easier to become a normal part of life.
- Slow Down! There is a common saying that you need to learn to walk before you can run. In music it is always a great way to learn difficult passages by slowing things down and giving your fingers, mouth and voice a chance to get used to what is required. If you can play something slowly it shows that you know what to play and you can then start to gradually increase the speed.
- Practise what you can’t play perfectly yet. Often students want to play what they already know as it can be quite fun and rewarding. Music practise gives students the ability to focus on something new and to see the reward that comes from consistent work. It’s a fantastic feeling to be able to do something you couldn’t before.
Of course there are other things you can do too – reading the notes from your teacher will show you what to focus on. And our teachers at Morgan Music are all here to make sure students enjoy learning music as we’ve found that students discover this are more interested in practising.
